We can make a loose cover for almost any type of seat, from couch covers to armchair covers and dining chair covers. In our experience – more than 60 years – there aren’t many types of seat that can’t be covered.
However, a small number of styles aren’t suitable for couch covers or armchair covers. Before you resign your poor old couch to landfill though, there’s good news – in the event that you can’t have a removable cover made, reupholstery is the answer.
Styles of furniture and types of couch cover
Our couch covers are fitted to the dimensions of your settee and come in three types – Easifit, Designer and Traditional.
- Easifit – a stretch cover fabric which offers excellent value for money. Plus, due to the flexibility of the fabric, we are able to cover over 98% of furniture styles. These covers are easy to remove and replace so you can wash your covers and refit them for a fresh, crease free look, time after time.
- Designer – a non stretch fabric, providing a more structured cover. Due to their structured fit, your Home Consultant would take extra care in their inspection and measuring of your furniture to ensure you get the best possible fit from your covers.
- Traditional – the pinnacle of our loose cover range. A pattern is made directly on your furniture by our expert crafts team – right down to the smallest detail. Your furniture is taken away where necessary to ensure a beautiful fit. The advantage of Traditional loose covers over reupholstery is that selected fabrics are machine washable.
The beauty of loose covers is their ability to be removed, cleaned or replaced. However, they do require some upkeep to remain in place and looking their best.
Some styles of furniture aren’t suitable for loose covers because the frame design or original design makes it difficult or impossible to secure the loose cover. They might also be unsuitable for covers because their design includes decorative wooden inserts or buttons.
Unsuitable furniture for loose covers – some examples
- Chesterfields (the deeply-buttoned style)
- Some leather sofas
- Some recliner chairs
- Tub chairs
An alternative solution for these furniture styles is reupholstery, where your couch or chair is stripped back to its frame and sympathetically restored, reviving it to its original glory and updating the fabric. Your consultant will be able to talk through the specific needs of your old suite or dining chair and agree a way forward with you.
Furniture styles suitable for loose covers
Washable and removable 2 seater sofa covers, 3 seater sofa covers, armchair covers and dining chair covers can be made to fit all other styles. Tailored specifically to the unique dimensions of your furniture – your Plumbs consultant will take dozens of measurements – they will fit snugly and remain firmly in place until you remove them (for washing or to replace with a second set of covers).
One of the most popular styles of couch owned by our customers is the 10 cushion club style. The suite has a 3 seater sofa and 2 chairs with non-fixed seat and back cushions. There are many other classic and modern styles suitable for loose, removable covers too, including:
- Queen Anne chairs
- Chesterfields (without deep buttons)
- Wing styles
- Recliners
- Sofa beds
- Drop arm sofas
- Chaise longues
It’s important to note that all furniture has its own complexities that may or may not make it suitable for loose covers. If you’re unsure which style of furniture you own, our home consultants can advise you.
Quality loose couch covers for favourite brands
Sofas, armchairs, dining chairs – and the rest – made by top furniture brands can be fitted with removable covers too. This includes current and discontinued lines from Multiyork, John Lewis, Parker Knoll and Ercol, plus many others. See our longer list of brand sofa covers or ask your Plumbs consultant.
What is reupholstery?
Reupholstery is the perfect way to revive a much loved piece of furniture, without compromising on the comfort and style of the original design. While it’s a bigger task than having loose covers made, the end results are well worth it.
It can offer an economical alternative to buying a new suite of comparable quality. Investing in sofa reupholstery means your couch doesn’t go into landfill. And, as with our couch covers, sofa reupholstery comes with a 3 Year Quality Guarantee.
Our master upholsterers strip your furniture down to its frame, inspect and tighten joints, replace worn or broken webs, springs, padding and stuffing, and reupholster your seat in the fabric of your choice.
Reupholstery is suitable for the problematic pieces we’ve listed above, including some recliner chairs and leather sofas with wood detailing and buttons, as well as armchairs, wingback chairs and dining chairs.
